John BALDESSARI

(born in 1931; lives in National City, Cali) has enlisted three people to create one of his paintings. First, he instructed someone to select 12 objects of interest and indicate them to a photographer who recorded the objects including the pointer finger. Then Baldessari rolled dice to determinate which of the 12 photographic images was to be reproduced, leaving the mechanics of this operation to a Sunday painter. The artist claims the resulting paintings as his own. Says Baldessari, « I’m somewhat of the idea that painting is dead, but I think there are still some interesting areas in which it can be pushed. »

En premier lieu, il a demandé à quelqu’un de sélectionner 12 objets présentant un intérêt particulier, et de les indiquer à un photographe qui a photographié les objets, avec le doigt pointant l’objet. Ensuite, Baldessari a lancé des dés pour déterminer laquelle des 12 photographies sera reproduite, laissant le reste de l’opération à un peintre du dimanche. L’artiste revendique la peinture réalisée comme sienne. Baldessari dit, « j’ai en quelque sorte l’idée que la peinture est morte, mais je pense qu’il y a toujours certains domaines intéressants dans lesquels elle peut être poussée. »
