Mel BOCHNER

(born in 1940; lives in New York) has been preoccupied with number and artificial mental systems. More recently he has been engaged in the notation of measurement and the investigation of language. His « Transduction » explores the changes in an idea structure as it is communicated through multilingual channels. He has phoned in a paragraph of art criticism with the instruction that the text be read to a contact in Italy who is to translate it and read it to a contact in Germany who, in turn, is to translate and read it to a contact in Sweden who is to translate and read it to a contact in England. The cycle is closed when the Englishman has called the museum to read his final translation. Copies of the initial and ultimate plus all the intermediate versions are on display.

Transduction explore les modifications de la structure d’une idée lorsqu’elle est communiquée par des chaînes multilinguistiques. Il a dicté par téléphone un paragraphe d’un texte de critique d’art avec pour instruction que le texte soit lu à un contact en Italie, qui le traduit et le lit à un contact en Allemagne qui, à son tour, le traduit et le lit à un contact en Suède, qui le traduit et le lit à un contact en Angleterre. Le cycle se termine lorsque l’Anglais appelle le musée pour lire sa traduction finale. Des copies de la version initiale et finale, ainsi que toutes les versions intermédiaires seront affichées.
